Professional Knowledge on Automobile Power Steering Pump Maintenance
- Selection and Inspection of Power Steering Fluid:
- Choose compatible power steering fluid; inferior fluid may cause reduced performance or even damage to the power steering pump.
- For electro-hydraulic and mechanical-hydraulic power steering systems, the power steering fluid should generally be replaced every 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers, or refer to the vehicle manual. If the fluid turns black, it must be replaced promptly.
- A filtering device must be used during refueling to ensure the fluid is clean. Check the power steering fluid level regularly in daily use to ensure it is between the upper and lower scale lines.
- Precautions for Using the Power Steering Pump:
- After the vehicle has been parked for a long time, start the engine and let it run idly for at least 10 minutes. Only drive after the power steering fluid reaches the normal working state to avoid immediate full-load operation.
- When using the steering system, do not turn the steering wheel to the extreme. Leave a certain margin when steering while the vehicle is stationary to prevent the power steering pump from being in a high-load state for a long time.
- Inspection and Replacement of Belts:
- For mechanical-hydraulic power steering systems driven by belts, check the belt condition regularly. Belts may crack or fray due to aging, and it is generally recommended to replace them every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers.
- Inspection of System Components:
- Regularly check whether the steering system oil pipes and power steering pump have leakage. If oil leakage is found, handle it or replace the relevant components in a timely manner.
- Meanwhile, check the tire pressure regularly to ensure it is appropriate. Too low tire pressure will increase the load on the steering system and shorten the service life of the power steering pump.
- Special Maintenance for Electric Power Steering Pumps:
- The electric power steering system does not require regular fluid replacement, but it is important to maintain normal tire pressure to avoid excessive load on the motor due to too low tire pressure.
- At the same time, prevent water from entering the electric power steering pump control module. If the sealing rubber ring is aging, replace it promptly.
